Don’t Use Tap Water For Nasal Rinses

May 19, 2020

I was talking to a friend recently and she told me that she has been using saline nasal rinses as a preventive measure for COVID-19 as she is in the high risk group as somebody who suffers from chronic sinusitis.

During our conversation she revealed that she used tap water to wash her nose. I had to share with her that it is not safe as there have been cases of people dying from brain-eating amoeba after rinsing their nose with tap water.

Safety tips for Nasal Rinses from Restore Your Breathing:

  1. Never use Tap Water.
  2. Use cooled, boiled water (boiled for about 5 minutes) or distilled water.
  3. Don’t use any additives, such as bleach, as they will irritate your nose.
  4. If you use tap water to clean your pot/bottle make sure that it is fully dry and no droplets of tap water remain before using again. Alternatively, you can always clean your pot/bottle with just boiled or distilled water.
